Reflective/DescriptiveEssay
Preface: I very much enjoy the process of thinking through ideas and looking at how I got to where I ended up. I've also found that writing out my thoughts helps me flesh them out even more. All that said, I'm now going to reflect on my brief reflective essay. (How meta is that??)
I initially wrote this piece as an example of a personal/reflective essay for my students, encouraging them to reflect on an event from their lives that had somehow impacted them, all the while implementing good practices of writing and essay structure. As I was writing, though, I quite seriously felt great emotion welling up within me. Mildly surprised, I found myself responding to said emotion by trying to find the words that would put the readers even just a little bit more in my shoes. I wanted them to see what I saw, hear what I heard. This event meant so much to me, and I wanted the reader to understand why. This resulted in a plethora of sensory details dotting the landscape of my words, and lo and behold, my reflective essay was evolving, also taking on the form of a descriptive essay.
So, there you have it. A two-fer. Two essays for the price of one. Because that's how I roll.
