This page is a small sampling of what my amazing students have accomplished. For the Animal Farm and Call of the Wild dioramas, students chose a scene from the novel pivotal to advancing the plot. They then created a 3D representation, summarized and analyzed the importance of the scene to the larger novel, and then presented their findings to the class.
With Frankenstein, the 8th graders built their own Frankenstein creature, based not on the culturally commonplace Boris Karloff version, but on Mary Shelley's own description. During the project, they also kept a brief journal detailing their experiences of the physical building while also making connections to the experiences of Victor Frankenstein and his creature.
The parts of speech boards asked students to take abstract concepts and make them real through pictures and text. Students had to think a little more outside the box when it came to prepositions and interjections!
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) was a great experience for our students, who spent four weeks straight writing their very own novel, start to finish, complete with pre-writing preparation and post-writing reflection. The kids have a lot of fun with the project, and I recommend for all English teachers to at least check it out and perhaps consider incorporating it into their program.
Finally, in my Old and New Testament classes, these students made visual representations of concepts that they had a particular interest in and explained their projects to the class.
